Tiny Videos

Manuel used to tell me about a hudge collection of tiny ecelctric trains at home. Beside that some of the track in Febrero were directly inspired by the movie "Love & Pop". Here's a little montage made with some of the clips that drove me to write the song. Enjoy.

FEBRERO: The Story So Far

Well. We've released a new album called FEBRERO.
It was edited by KinGem Records.

It was played with the full band with the collaboration of many friends, such as Stars in Coma (SW), Anthony Rochester (USA) and The Brigadier (UK).

It cost 4 years to write songs, play'em live and record it along with Manuel Magnani, Mike Leffe, Porlock, Dendrix, Simona Rovida, Andrea Lucchi.

We made a video

And some songs preview for you

You can buy it here

Here's some notes for audience and press

February has always been a crucial period for me. It was February when I realized I had to start a new life, it was February when I was left alone, it was February when I wondered from pub to clubs asking my friends what could have been a real cool name for an album. The answer was quite clear, after I began to work on it’s first track.

“February” - the song - brought me a lot of luck. I had no idea I was about to form a band when I wrote it. It was just a reflection on some dark feelings I lived and some sort of tribute to Hideaki Kanno’s movie “Love & Pop”. Then the chorus came, and I wondered about Tomoko Kawase killing her fictional character Tommy February6 to resurrect as a new character as Tommy Heavenly6. February was not such a bad name for an album after all. In a month Tiny Tide were formed, and I guess that it’s mostly due to that first demo.

Why “Febrero” then? As Tiny Tide began to record the first songs we had a lot of connection with Latin American stuff and Spanish contacts. We were really close to Belanova Fanclub, we even covered their song “Niño”, even broadcasted on the National Mexican Radio, we had the pleasure to get in contact with a team of indie girls called “Grupies Totales” (see the track “Total Groupie”) from Valencia, and we featured the Spanish compilation “Pop Nation” for Bon Vivant Records.

It was a newexperience to start thinking about my songs as something played by a band in front of an audience and not only by this boy in a room for some other insane youngster with somekind of devide stuck in his hears. We started to play together, tear apart, meet new bands and friends during collaborations and live show.

So, what is Febrero after all? An alternative score on a niche Japanese movie? An album on winter? A tribute to David Bowie and The Beatles? A Via Crucis on the denial and acquiescence of my bleeding heart? Just a reflection on those days indie scene? Don’t really know. This album goes for those four years that binded our paths to a unique unforgettable tracks.

THE TRACKS

FEBRERO - This song reflects the opening sequences of Hideaki Kanno’s movie “Love & Pop”.
A girl is pondering on the last moments of her empty life before drowning in a swimming pool.
The song is also a tribute to the Japanese singer Tomoko Kawase.

TINY TRAINS - Second song inspired by “Love & Pop”.
I have always been fashinated by trains, as I find them very adventurous and relaxing,
Trains symbolize new adventures and unpredictable connections to new people.
The song started with Porlock suggesting to make a song in a Pizzicato 5 style, but I guess it changed over time.
I also wanted to experiment a bit trying to write a canon(Don't know what you mean here). The choirs are deeply influenced by Wayne Coyne.

THE PSYCHOPATH AT THE CLUB - This song is a collage of bands' name and songs, being my futile attempt to try and get into the so called “indie scene” in 2006.
It’s cleatly a nod to Fanfarlo's “The Kids At The Club”, but you can see a lot of retro-influences in here as well. First demo was recorded with Fabio Benni from Le Man Avec Les Lunettes.
He was also the one suggesting the song should have sounded like a “Scary Monster” track by David Bowie. That’s why I needed the help from Andrè Brorsson from Stars in Coma.

GIRLS FROM RONTA - This song was intentionally written to be a hit, and it was fun to see how voices soon spread in my town refering to “a boy who had made a track that really rocks”.
Ronta is a very small town close to another tiny town nearby my tiny little city.
The most common comment from girls from my place is: “Are there even Girls in Ronta?”.
I put Beach Boys, Ash, Primal Scream, Blur in a superblender and came out with yet another mock on the local indie scene, where girls are trying to catch up with fashion in a not so cosmopolitan town.

A SONG FOR EMI - Definetly a tribute to Elliott Smith.
Manuel always said this is the song he wants to play his children to put them to sleep.
The song stars as a consolation to a girl, but in the end it’s all about four lads from Liverpool who changed our lives with their songs.

GINGER GENIE - Clearly a mock on a quite famous song from Mr. David Bowie.
It all started with a sequence of notes in a Nancy Sinatra style.
Porlock brought new life to our first version with a totally unespected synth solo on my little Alesis Micron.

KITTY JESUS - Writing an album called “FEBERERO” was not in my mind when I wrote this song, neither playing in a band. Still it was my first attempt not to write something personal but trying to catch people's attention with typical indie/twee scene motives such as cats, hand claps, two open chords along with la la la la choirs. The song was clearly influenced by McCartney and a show called “Andy Milonakis”. Oh, yeah! There were an olympionic marathone crossing my town that year.

SILVER STAR - The first version of this song was called “SILVIA”.
11 years has passed. It is still a nice little tune. I turned the song in some kind of cowboy anthem on the braveness of finding the strength to carry on where there's no one else but ourselves.

SCRAMBLED EGGS - First “Yesterday”’s title. It’s no secret at all. I wrote this song a little bit later, in 1993. At least it was always winter! A sunny day. I went to visit my mother in her shop, and I was blown away by the unespected presence of a girl I suddently felt in love with.
Like snow melting in the sun, this feeling lasted only a day, but it was enough for me to write a song. The first title of the song was “3 Minutes Sun”.
I added some lyrics and the psychadelic coda for a new version to finally have André Brorsson totally reinvent the arrangement in a day,
only to find the song destroyed along with his old hard disk. Lucky for me he sent it to me before it was lost in the digital grayeyard!

MASK ME MASK ME MASK ME - In Italy we’ve got a strange celebration called “Carnevale”.
It’s basically our Halloween, and it was inevitable to have a song about people masking themselves for parties on an album called “Febrero”. The song was deeply influenced by a band from Bristol called “Santa Dog”.

We had the honour to share a little Italian tour with them, and we got to know some very special human beings. Guess there’s a little bit of Morrissey’s distress and life bugs here as well, as the tune talks about a very popular celebrity unable to lead a normal life among other people outside his home. He feels sad and alone, so he prays to this girl to change his life, and to hide his persona under a new identity in order to get some fun and meet people in obscure parties.
It’s a song about dreaming of redemption in desperate times, I suppose. Aren’t we all dreamers after all? Last line goes out to a band called Ramones.

TOTAL GROUPIE - This song was made as a tribute to the Spanish indie team of “Grupies Totales”. It’s all about the ‘70s and a movie called “Almost Famous”.
Although there’s a specific line that goes to Cisco from “Tiger! Tiger”, trying to catch him while directin all the members of “I’m From Barcelona” on the top of a chair.
Andrea Lucchi from “Stones of Venice” brought new life to the song thanks to his typical guitar arpeggio and a catchy upbeat drum.

LOVER / LOSER - This is the last song I wrote for Febrero. The song started with the intention of trying to involve Fabio Benni in a duo pretending to be Paul McCartney and David Bowie on a song that never meant to be.
I never got an answer from Fabio, so I just carried on the song by myself trying not too hard to get to schizoid. At first the song was meant to be about Abraham Lincoln (born February the 12th) and his homonymous jazz player, but the dichotomic idea of Lover Vs Loser came to my mind and the tune was completely changed.
The song is done almost by myself, except from Anthony Rochster providing a marvellous Hammond Organ.

BEACHVOLLEY FIELDS FOREVER - One sunday morning I woke up, sharing the bed with a real cute lady. I sneaked to my keyboard and I started to play this song. “What’s that?”, she said half asleep. “It just came to my mind, its’ something from Lenny Kravitz”.
I said that because I woke up after having dreamt about hearing Lenny at the Radio.
The rest of the melody came to my mind after few days, but the track remained without lyrics for nearly 7 years. Never recorded. Only in my head. The name for the title came to my mind during a winter walk by the sea, complaining to myself on how beach volley fields were given more and more space from the beach every year. In time the song became some sort of Strawberry Fields 2.0. Take it away.

VALENTINE DISCO NIGHT - One day me and my ex-girlfriend went out from a restaurant on a Valentine Night, when I received a strange call from a friend: “Marco is dead”. We were quite scared at first, since a friend of ours died not so long ago in a car crash.
It turned out to be Marco Pantani. This song is about him too, but in the end you will find many Valentine experiences I had summed up into one relieving and reveling chant.
I tried to ignore the elephant in the room for the whole February, but in the end here it is.
Still hurt, shaking, down on the ground, waiting for a new March to bring the sun back.

The Drums, The Drums, The Drums

Yesterday I went with Mike Leffe to the studio to record the drums for our next tiny little Xmas song and two tracks for TenneT, the second not awaited album from the band that will actually be the third.

It was really fun, and we also took our time to take come pics & clips (as you can probably see).

"It's really intense, I think", said Mike Leffe on the drums recording for Left alone for Christmass Time. It was quite rocky indeed, also if probably we weren't so close to the click in many parts. I really love how we worked on the construction of that song. It's not that genius, wanting to be a silly simple Xmas tune based on a real Mike Leffe experience, but it has a lot of clever variations.

All my heart went to the recording of "FIX", "TenneT" opening. This song is probably my Life on Mars. I carried on the melody since I was 16 y.o., added another part I wrote when I was 24, and worked on the lyrics a year ago based on some childhood memories. I was really happy to work on that song with Mike Leffe, because a lot of other interesting stuff came out on the arrangement, pushing the song in a very prog-pop direction slightly becoming a cross between Genesis and Beatles.

Let's see what will become of these tracks in the future :)

U.N.DISCO & Spotify

Tiny Tide are now available on Spotify!

Tiny Tide took part to the Neo Italo Disco compilation "U.N.DISCO" (by KinGem Records) with the song "Mumarcord". Mark Zonda also features on the song "King of The Parking" along with Anthony Rochester and Ildy Minardi and "Astro Fille" by Les Petit Chenilles.

Here's a nice review of the album and "Astro Fille" video.

Who knows, not me

It's been a lot since I haven't update this tiny blog :)

It's been quite a long summer vacation for me, and I felt the urge to split myself between music and the sea. Not that I managed to get that tan, but I've been writing and playing quite a lot.

While Mike Leffe is enjoying his side folk project with Fiore, I'm buisy as well working a long a girl singing in one of my favourite Italian bands :)

She made my summer, and I'm really superglad about the material we're putting together. (We already recorded 5 demos in 2 weeks leaving out 2 songs and I'm already writing a new one). Doin' a succesful he/she project had always been one of my dreams, and it's really nice writing songs for two parts à-la-brunettes. Our intention is to bring you the finest indie pop album of 2012... We already thought about the title, but we're still unsure on the name of the band... so any suggestion is really appreciated :)

Not only that. Vulpiano Records asked me to work on a new Ep. It will be a really nice surprise (I hope) as well. I've already written and recorded 4 songs out of 5, and I'm totally proud about the lyrics. Simone Cecchetti also provided me a fantastic picture for the cover. I couldn't have asked for more!

We're also out for a Kingem Records compilation for the Neo Italo Disco project called "U.N.DISCO", with a song called "Mumarcord" and a few bit of other collaborations on another couple of songs.

We also find the time for some very hot (it's summer in the Tropics) band practicing and Matt Share was so cool to shoot some videos:
Why we are practising so bad? We're trying to set up an Italian tour with The Cavalcade, still seems we're failing in finding dates. Anybody wants to adopt two indie pop bands? Check this link!

What else? Andrè Brorsson from Stars In Coma (he just released his new work for Kingem Records) he's doin' a great GENIUS job with the editing and mixing of our album Februero (he was surprising on making "The Psychopath At The Club" looking like the new Boys Keep Swinging) that we decided to finish and present - guess what - on February!

Anyway guess our third album will be ready before the first. Stay in tune! :)

Ukulele O'Clock

They told me I had to learn at least some of my songs with that stuff... so I finally decided to give it a try, starting with a new one. Have fun!

Zeznatic Beach

Playing at Travolta (NRG) was A REAL pleasure. I don't know if I can talk for the others as well, but as for me it was the first time I felt we were treated like real VIP! The (very hudge and cool) venue had nothing to do with the usual garages slash dark clubs slash small rooms where me myself as spectator too use to see my beloved indie artistist and bands, but it was like... being Bono playing at Zoo in Dublin 1993, I suppose. Or something like that. Great guys at the serivce, expensive tecs and equipements (also DJs did tested EACH of the eight amps coming down from the disco ceiling, clearing the sounds with a wash of white noise and testing their frequencies limits seeing at which point glasses could break), a reserved table with dozen of bottles of beer served by waiters with compliments by the landlord, people having to wait for us to begin OUTSIDE the venue with this kind of insane idea of having the audience to come in with us already playing (we opened with "Girls From Ronta", a shame for very brilliant versions of "The Smiths & The Cure" and "Do Mean It's A Mess" that didn't made it to the show). In a word: we were happy, and you could have seen it in the aftershow with Tinies and their closest girls and friends dancing like fools! The only regret not having had the time to check if my guitar was in tune (it was not). Big stuff, cool youngters, we were just fish in an aquarium, still closest fans hadn't too much difficulties to see we were the same indie jerks of always :)

Rock on Tinies!

Enchantment Under The Cesuola

Possibly best performance ever, just me and Mic Leffe Tiny Tide was sliced in a garage duo, just for one night, and since far to obvious comparsions with other bands started to pop up few days from the concert we decided to mock our own name on "The White Tides". I was so electrified by that idea that I decided to start the show with Chuck, my dark 80's Gretsch. It was a good show indeed, with a lot of covers and friends crowding possibly the most dangerous bar in Cesena, starting to play at 00.00 a.m. Being only a a drum and a guitar gave us space to a lot of ideas and solo moments, starting from the blues intro with harmonica and a psychedelic post-rock aftershow with double drummers and a shoegazian Zonda being pointed as a Michale J Fox on acid at the end of his rock performance on Back To The Future's Enchantment Under The Sea.

Well. Beside that last moment of the show (that lasted quite 20 minutes so far) (there's a bit took from Matt Share) the whole show was filmed by Luca. Thank you Luca!

Sometimes Always

Mattatoio's gig with Santa Dog was for sure the main turning point of our band. Looking back to these videos it's impressive how far we're improved, still that night we became aware of our potential after a couple of very bad gigs of how good we could have been in time, and it was totally unexpected!

Mic Leffe taped some of those unforgettable moments. About two years later, deep in fever, I found the time to edit some of those recordings and tube'em. Here you go

Rock in The Video

Some time ago I collaborated with a UKian artist calle Phillip Lockwood, aka LeBleu. I made vocals, melody and lyrics for a song called "Rocking The Empire", for the project "The Rise and Fall of... LeBleu!", a concept album on the decadence of civilizations.

Maybe it's because I'm deep in fever today, but since I was partially inspired by "Roma" by Federico Fellini I decided to make a little video about it. Check it out!

So less to say

Don't know why... they keep on asking me to do these things. And anytime... I AGREE!
That's me acousting "I Would Say". You can find a smoother electronic version of the song on our last EP, with a terrific solo by Dendrix at the end of it.

Today me and Matt Share went to the countryside (and up to the hills!) to shoot a little video. Curious? Meanwhile enjoy this little extra :)

The WildHeart EP Release

Qui il link all'evento su last.fm

Nel frattempo noi Tiny abbiamo un mese molto largo per imparare i brani nuovi (ah! ah! ah! ci voglio vedere a rifare "Needful Things"!). Ecco me e Michele, abbandonati nella sala prove, ai primi approcci con "I Would Say"

T-Roll

What a nice little gig. It's easy to say that after the storm has gone! First thing I heard once I put all the instruments down to La Vigna pavement was that oh-they-had-forgotten but there was a jazz trio playing during the same night. Is there any Monthy Python fan watching this blog? When something absurd is already happening you gotta get ready for something even creazier. Nobody's expecting the Spanish Inquisition. We were already struggling with thented ampli and things struggling to fit all the equipments of the two band in the small (quotation finger mode on) stage when this crazy bongo-guy came along with the hudge percussions I've ever got in touch with.

"I had it", I told Dendrix. And I started to plug-off Chuck, Osamushi, the microphone and all the effects. "I'll only sing with the naked voice and my acoustic guitar", as I ended to plug both into the bass-ambli of the jazz trio after their performance.

Mic seemed quite serene. "Mic, in case you didn't noticed it, we took off quite everything from the stage!". You had the point once again, Dendrix!

But - surprise surprise - everything was fine! We had a great show and people really liked the performance! A lot of friends came along to see us, and we all were very excited by the gig, as we tried to pull our best out from that night, letting all our energy and soul flew out from each song!

Mic had a little problem with his drumset, and I started to pay "Do Mean It's A mess", that the band never heard before. Guess Dendrix didn't knew if I was jocking or if I was really intentioned to carry on the song till the end. But I did, and Manuel was so genious to following me with his bass. Bravo Manuel!

They even asked for two encores! We went for "S♥L" and a "The Psychopath At The Club" reprise, while I felt happy to leave my guitar behind to run up and down the stage up to where the mic cable allowed me to go.

At the end of the show we all run to a Brit-Pop party in a nearby venue. The jazz-trio drummer came nearby to express is enthusiasm for the show.

- Your band is great! Who writes the song?
- Me...
- Unbelievable! They're great!
- Thanks
- Your band recalls me a lot another great band... the.... the...

And I was thinking: "Tell it! Tell it! David Bowie? T-Rex? Suede!?"

- FRANK ZAPPA AND THE MOTHER OF INVENTION!

The Mother? Well... guest it's a lot better than Tokyo Hotel, I suppose!

Here's some pics of the night.

And here's some videos...

Mascherami

La genesi di questa scanzone è un po' strana. (Stiamo parlando di "Mask Me Mask Me Mask Me").

Hem:

"Beh, tu sapessi come mi sento in questi giorni
la vita è diventata così di successo
e non so veramente come potrei scappare
ogni giorno cerco di non diventare pazzo.

Se sai come uscire di prigione
trasforma queste sbarre in ritagli di carta
e portami via di qui

E' così chiaro,
ogni millimetro di aria è fatto di atmosfera
porta le danze e caccia le stelle
tienimi stretto e prova a

Masherarmi
Dimostrami che ci tieni veramente veramente a me
Mascherami

sorrisi, saluti e coccarde
raggiungi la stella più luminosa e

Mascherami...

Non voglio vivere questa vita
Non un'altra volta

Se tu sapessi come mi sento questi giorni..."
